Music in the Jesuit Missions
April 13 - 22, 2018 Festival

XII Festival Internacional de Música Renacentista
y Barroca Americana "Misiones de Chiquitos"

12th International Festival of American Renaissance & Baroque Music

Place: Jesuit Missions of the Chiquitos
(Unesco World Heritage), Santa Cruz, Bolivia

Date: April 13 to 22, 2018

A unique journey to the Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos, Bolivia, a World Heritage Site, to attend this musical festival featuring over 800 musicians from Europe and Latin America in 100 concerts. Front row seats for concert events and best available hotels.

The International Festival of American Renaissance and Baroque Music takes place once every two years in over 20 Jesuit Mission towns of the Amazon jungle regions around Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia and is not to be missed.

Established in 1996, this festival has become one of Latin America’s largest musical events: celebrating a trove of music discovered in the 70s that was written as much by European missionaries as by people native to these regions during the 17th and 18th c., the festival rediscovers the hybrid culture present in Bolivia shining a light on its rich musical archive.

Bolivia is vibrant musical and artistic culture along with historic performance venues... More reason to travel to Bolivia? Friendly people. Beautiful landscapes. Food. Weather. Shopping... We hope you’re catching on. Let the joy of Bolivia rub off on your ensemble: Fascinating history, stunning vistas, unrivaled performance venues with generous audiences—there is no lack of good reasons to schedule your tour through Bolivia. Let us customize your stay, and prepare to be welcomed like an old friend, all while experiencing performance opportunities unmatched by any other location worldwide.

Explore the indigenous, colonial and natural riches of Bolivia.

The International Festival of American Renaissance and Baroque Music will enable you to sample the very best of Bolivian daily life and history combined with breathtaking landscapes in and around Santa Cruz, and featuring privately guided tours.

This trip is unique in that it combines the incredible natural history and scenery of the tropical woodlands and fertile plains at the southern end of the Amazon basin, with some of Bolivia’s most interesting cultural elements such as the vibrant, cosmopolitan city of Santa Cruz, and the 18th c. Mission churches of the Chiquitania.

WHERE?

• SANTA CRUZ - Far from the altiplano in the huge eastern lowland plains of Bolivia is Santa Cruz de la Sierra, a city where the warmth of its people is only exceeded by the heat of its climate. Santa Cruz is rapidly becoming  the principal gateway to Bolivia:  it is the center of the country´s economic growth, has the best international airport in the country, and is at a low altitude – only 416 m. (1,350 ft) above sea level. The rapid economic development has not affected the colonial character of the old backstreets nor the famous good humor of the city's inhabitants.

• AROUND SANTA CRUZ - Santa Cruz displays outstanding biodiversity typical of the Upper Amazon Basin, as well as a number of cultural remains from past civilizations. Easy access from the bustling city to nearby parks: beautiful slices of paradise await, surrounded with exotic plants and animals; walk through self-guided ecological paths and exuberant forest as you look for butterflies and orchids; explore pre-Columbian remains at Samaipata archaeological site and World Heritage Site (UNESCO)...

• JESUIT MISSIONS OF THE CHIQUITOS - The Jesuit Missions of the Chiquitos are truly monumental treasures and are officially listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our excursions combine history, religious art, culture, and beautiful countryside as found in very few other parts of the world. Our 2-day trip includes a visit to San Xavier (built 1691) and Concepción (1709). Optional add-on also includes San Ignacio (1748), San Rafael (1696), San Miguel (1721) and Santa Ana (1755).

Starting in 1975, restoration work on the church (now cathedral) of Concepción unearthed more than 5,000 musical scores from the 17th and 18th centuries. Later another 6,000 scores were found in Moxos and several thousand additionally in San Xavier. Some of these works have been interpreted at the festivals.

WHEN?

• THE MUSIC FESTIVAL - Every 2 years (even years). It is one of the most important international music festivals on the continent. The International Festival of American Renaissance and Baroque Music took place for the first time in 1996 and is now the largest festival of early music in South America. Over 800 musicians from Europe and Latin America take part in approximately one hundred concerts. Festival concerts are held simultaneously in 22 places in Bolivia, both in large urban centers such as Santa Cruz, Cochabamba and La Paz, as well as in small towns, which are areas of Jesuit and Franciscan missions. Churches, in which the festival concerts take place, were entered in 1990 by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The 2018 INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL of American Renaissance & Baroque Music will be held from April 13 to 22, 2018.

May is the beginning of the dry season.

The ancient Jesuit missions of Chiquitos in the province of Santa Cruz and those of Moxos in Beni are among the principal riches of Bolivia’s regional and national cultural heritage. Apart from the era’s musical legacy the towns also boast architectural and other cultural riches, prompting UNESCO to declare six of the towns—San Xavier, Concepción, Santa Ana, San Rafael, San Miguel, and San José de Chiquitos—World Heritage Sites.

Unlike other former Jesuit mission towns in Bolivia that no longer exist, these six towns have survived and flourished over time, retaining their customs, celebrations, ceremonies, style of dress, and tradition of instrument-making.

Soloists, choral groups, and groups of chamber musicians with a repertoire of American and European Renaissance and baroque musical offerings may participate in this biennial event. Each festival is accompanied by a scientific conference, the International Symposium of Musicology (ECSIM), in which historians, researchers, and musicologists discuss topics relevant to ancient music. Activities also include presentation of books and CDs, arts exhibitions and many cultural presentations.
