Under the protection of the majestic Mount Illimani, a city emerges from the depths, within the harsh climate of the Royal Cordillera.

Essential La Paz will enable you to sample the very best of Bolivian daily life and history combined with breathtaking Andean landscapes in and around the city of La Paz, and featuring privately guided tours. You will spend two nights at hotel in La Paz and one night at a lodge at Lake Titicaca.

Our journey of discovery will take us to the ancient ruins of Tiwanaku, not far from the city, where one of the most advanced of the pre-Columbian civilizations once flourished. Tiwanaku was the cultural and ceremonial capital of the Andean world long before the arrival of the Incas. Today it is Bolivia’s most important archaeological site, although a large part of the ancient city remains buried.

Lake Titicaca is certainly one of the highlights of our trip. This is as much a cultural phenomenon as it is a geographic site. Through the millennia, the solemn cobalt blue of its waters has witnessed the flourishing of the most important cultures of the Andean high plain. Titicaca is the cradle of the great Inca Empire. A legend tells us that in its waters appeared Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo, founders of the Cuzco dynasty...

Essential La Paz has it all, from great landscapes to cultural excursions, with an emphasis on the urban and rural Bolivian daily life. This trip promises to satisfy the interests of everyone!

As always with Fremen Tours, all our tours are fully customizable & have daily departures (you go where you want, when you want). We depart 365 days a year.

So make the most of your limited time in La Paz! We’ll brief you on a variety of tour options that are available for you. Do as much or as little as you like. Choose from active experiences or more relaxing options, and feel free to mix and match -- it’s entirely up to you. Do you have a special interest, such as photography or hiking? No problem. We will help you create a personal tour experience.

WHERE?

• LA PAZ - A city for both enriching visits and adventurous discoveries. Lose yourself in streets brimming with life, where neighbors, artisans and sorcerers rub elbows amidst the daily agitation of typical markets. La Paz's outskirts also offer an array of spectacular sites, such as eerie rock sculptures created from ancient erosion at the Valley of the Moon. Bolivia is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and it is great to spend a few days in La Paz as the surrounding mountains are truly spectacular and mighty enticing.

• TIWANAKU (also spelled Tiahuanaco) - This site was the political and religious center of the most important pre-Inca civilization. The Tiwanaku culture spans nearly two millennia — by far the longest lasting of the pre-Hispanic civilizations. The Tiwanakans reached what would be on today’s maps: the Pacific Ocean, the south of Peru, the north of Chile and Argentina, and they also had contacts with the eastern lowlands. Tiwanaku, capital of this empire, is one of the most interesting and mysterious archaeological sites in the Andes. Highlights of the site include the Semi-Underground Temple, Kalassaya Temple, and the Akapana pyramid.

• LAKE TITICACA - According to legend, the Sun, as well as the pre-Inca god, Viracocha, rose from its depths. The Incas amended the legend to suit their purposes. They contended that on Titicaca Island, following rains that flooded the earth, the sun placed his male and female children and instructed them to teach the barbarians who dwelt on the earth. Titicaca Island or Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun), is our destination. We will spend time wandering among the ancient ruins hidden in the folds of the steeply terraced slopes of Pilkokaina, Stairway of Yumani...

Off the main tourist trail but well worth a visit, the smaller portion of the lake or Wiñay Marka is very close to the Andes mountain range and offers stunning views of the Cordillera Real. The lakeside and most of its islands are inhabited by rural farmers and fisherman who carry on centuries-old traditions. The coastline is ringed by fields of totora reeds that create habitat for large populations of water birds and fish.

WHEN?

Year-Round Departures (depart virtually any day of the week).

May - October is dry season.

Day 1 - Arrive La Paz; meet your chauffeur/guide upon arrival at El Alto airport, at the bus station or directly at your hotel. Tour the city; sightseeing options include downtown La Paz, a variety of museums, the famous Witches Market, the Valley of the Moon... Overnight at local hotel in La Paz.

Day 2 - Discover Tiwanaku archaeological site. A visit to Tiwanaku will take you back in time to an impressive city built by an extremely technologically advanced pre-Inca society. The Tiwanaku culture is believed to have lasted for 28 centuries, from 1600 B.C. to A.D. 1200. It is interesting to observe the excavation work under way at the site.
Carry on along the shores of the sacred lake. Copacabana, a very ancient Aymara-Quechua shrine, is the main Bolivian town on the shore of Titicaca. Here you will visit the 16th-century Spanish basilica of the patron saint of Bolivia—Our Lady of Copacabana. Overnight in Copacabana. [BL]

Day 3 - Visit the Island of the Sun — look for Inca remains at Pilkokaina and Yumani and learn about the daily life of the native Aymaras. Myths, legends and mystery – the Island of the Sun has it all. For many South American cultures, this place is considered a sacred site and the location of legendary figures. With its serene beauty and peacefulness, the Island of the Sun is also a major tourist destination. The walking is medium difficulty on good trails (if you handle the altitude it can be a relaxing hike). Optional overnight at a charming hotel in Copacabana or on the Island of the Sun. [BL]
