Join us in exploring the urban and rural life and traditions of Bolivia with diverse and exciting visits, meeting with craftsmen — woodcarvers, weavers, potters, natural dyers, leatherworkers, traditional garments, metalworkers and jewelers... — and village people in their homes and workshops.

From Santa Cruz we will journey to Cochabamba, Sucre, and La Paz. In every city we base ourselves for several nights and travel off the beaten track with personal guides, visiting remote communities that still maintain their strong traditions and culture, where art is a celebration of their everyday lives.

We use independent hotels, expert local guides and tutors, and visit individually owned enterprises and studios... Throughout our stay we help building profitable businesses inspired by handmade traditions. A very personal journey through the richness of craft, with wonderful photographic opportunities!

You will enjoy exclusive access to a unique variety of handicrafts and local products not usually seen by the general public, with a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes, meeting with craftspeople and local experts.

With many opportunities to customize your stay, Arts & Crafts of Bolivia is designed to give you an authentic look at Bolivia, its people and their daily life.

Total beginners to professional artists are invited to join in.

WHERE?

• Santa Cruz - The tropical way of life in the heart of South America: charm and colonial tradition, combined with a growing commercial activity. In the villages surrounding Santa Cruz one meets artisans who weave together the richness of tradition and creativity, fantasy and practicality to produce some of the most exciting popular art in Bolivia.

• Cochabamba - The valley of eternal spring. Within a 50-kilometer (30 miles) radius of Cochabamba City are dozens of small towns, many of which specialize in a particular art tradition. Often combining ancient and modern techniques, most of the region’s output comes from families that have spent generations becoming known for a particular item.

• Sucre - A charming city with a unique blend of indigenous heritage and colonial architecture. In a world where centuries-old traditional crafts are slowly disappearing, the history and culture of the Tarabuco, Jalq'a and Potolo weavers is alive and thriving. The works created by the indigenous artisans in this small Bolivian town are as beautiful as they are high quality. Behind each weaving also lies a story of cultural identity, and the lives of the artisans themselves.

• La Paz - The city of contrasts: a unique blend of cultures and ways of life, and located within breathtaking panoramas, with whispers of ancient civilizations at Tiwanaku – one of the most interesting archaeological sites of South America – and at Sacred Lake Titicaca, where legend has it the Inca Empire was born. Choose your workshop — La Paz offers classes of all kinds... everything from cooking to glasswork, wood carving, jewelry, weaving and fiber products, basketmaking, pottery, sculpture... you get the picture! Almost Anything and Everything Bolivian! These classes are hands on and tutors are experienced artists and professionals.

WHAT?

Cultural Exploration – Community Projects – Artists/Artisans Excursions

• Note: Although this trip is not a shopping tour, of course you are welcome to buy the products on display at the artisans workshops. No matter what you may buy here, you won't spend much in a relative sense, but remember that your purchases most definitely are helping to feed a family, educate a child, or supply medicine to people who otherwise would not have access to these things. Your patronage of these places goes straight to the people, and will help in maintaining the livelihoods of the artisans, as well as their families and communities.
